Black Women’s Health Summit
The goal of Shaping Health Equity’s Black Women’s Health Summit is to convene experts to develop a women’s and girls’ health agenda using a socio-ecological model approach to dismantle systemic inequities and transform health outcomes for Black women and girls across the lifespan in Baltimore City (and Maryland).
Betty Irene Moore Fellowship for Nurse Leaders and Innovators Annual Convocation
Dr. Alexander, along with 4 Co-founding Fellows from the Inaugural Class of Betty Irene Moore Fellows developed the Black Nurse Scientist Mentoring Program to support Black nursing leaders and generate pathways for nurses to become PhD-prepared scientists.

NIH HIV & Women Scientific Workshop
Dr. Kamila A. Alexander will speak about reproductive coercion and abuse in the NIH HIV & Women Scientific Workshop: Centering the Health of Women in HIV Research on March 21-22. The 2-day virtual event will feature discussion among researchers and advocates on topics relevant to cisgender and transgender women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals.

Black Nurse Scientist Mentoring Program | HBCU Tour
Dr. Kamila A. Alexander and her colleagues, Dr. Dawn Aycock, Dr. Schenita Randolph, and Dr. Fawn Cothran, are speaking about their research and career journey to students at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University as part of the tours at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
The HBCU tours are a component of the Black Nurse Scientist Mentoring Program (BNSMP), funded by the Gordon & Betty Irene Moore Foundation, to raise awareness and foster interest in the pivotal role of partnership with HBCUs as a pathway for Black nurse leaders and scientists.

U.S. Conference on HIV/AIDS
TRL members Dr. Alexander, Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. DaJaneil McCree, and PhD Student Gloria Mpundu will be participating in the U.S. Conference on HIV/AIDS in Washington, D.C. This conference is highlighting Black women all week and the conference theme is “A Love Letter to Black Women”. We are excited to be in community with other advocates, scientists, and change agents in the space that is promoting Black women’s health!
1st Annual Phyllis L. Poore Resource Fair
TRL participated in the 1st Annual Phyllis L. Poore Recovery Resource Fair on August 16. This event was structured to provide resources for a specific targeted population. Those who have been affected directly or indirectly by the Substance Abuse Epidemic in Baltimore City. We were excited to participate and meet new friends promoting health, well-being, and resilience in our community!
2nd JHU CFAR Black Women-Led HIV Research Think Tank
With CFAR support, the Threads Research Lab (PI: Dr. Kamila A. Alexander) and M.O.C.H.A. Lab (PI: Dr. Tiara C. Willie) are coming together again for the second JHU CFAR Black Women-led HIV Research Think Tank on May 5th, 2023.
RAINN Day @ Morgan State
The Threads Research Lab collaborated with Morgan State University's Counseling Center on RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) Day to raise awareness about sexual assault and street harassment and educate students on ways to prevent them.
JHU CFAR Black Women-Led HIV Research Think Tank
With CFAR support, the Threads Research Lab (PI: Dr. Kamila A. Alexander) and M.O.C.H.A. Lab (PI: Dr. Tiara C. Willie) came together for our first ever JHU CFAR Black Women-led HIV Research Think Tank on February 24, 2023. Our goal is to create a collaborative space for Black women scientists involved in HIV research and to strengthen the scientific trajectories of Black women researchers and trainees conducting HIV research within the JHU milieu. During the Think Tank, we had various networking, relationship-building professional development, and focused writing opportunities. We also debriefed on what went well and rooms for improvement for future Think Tanks.
V-Day Campaign
In honor of V-Day (the global activist movement to end violence against women), the Creative Team of the Threads Research Lab set up a table at the John Hopkins University Homewood Campus to raise awareness for this cause. We also quizzed students to see how much they knew about the implications of violence on women’s health. Check out our Instagram so see how they responded!
Vivien T. Thomas Health Fair
The Threads Research Lab attended the Vivien T. Thomas Health Fair to inform medical pathway high school students about our research on BIPOC women’s health and relationships.

MLK Day of Service
The Threads Research Lab joined the organization, Thread, on MLK Day of Service to help pick up trash around the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School (just a few blocks down from the JHSON)!
17th Annual Maryland Women of Color Network In-Person Conference
This annual statewide conference (at Bowie State University) serves as a networking and training event for rape crisis and recovery centers, government agencies, faith-based organizations, community-based organizations, community leaders and students to increase knowledge and gain skills related to sexual violence prevention and cultural competency that can be applied in their organizations and within their communities. Two Youth Advisory Board members of the Threads Research Lab will be in attendance!

2022 Hopkins CFAR Annual Meeting
At this year’s Hopkins CFAR Annual Meeting, various CFAR awardees gave scientific presentations about their HIV-related investigations. Among these was Dr. Kamila Alexander who highlighted the TANGLED research study as well as the Mid-Atlantic CFAR Consortium (MACC) Nursing Initiative.
Purple Ribbon Campaign
In honor of Domestic Violence awareness month, our Creative Team set up tables at John Hopkins University’s Homewood and East Campuses (School of Nursing and Bloomberg School of Public Health) where we handed out informational materials, resource pamphlets, and purple ribbons for people to wear to show their support for those who have experienced domestic violence. We even asked students and other passersby various questions about the statistics of intimate partner violence (IPV) to further educate the public on the prevalence of this form of abuse.
Clothesline Project
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the JHSON Threads Research Lab is hosting the Clothesline Project - a visual Display of shirts designed by women survivors of violence or by someone who loves a woman who has been a victim.
